Senthalir Illam - Mullaittivu (northern-east of SL = Tamil Eelam = Tamil Land)
Senthalir Illam, "Tender Sprout Home," was a children's home for over 150 orphaned and underprivileged children, including 30 infants attending the school's nursery.

When the tsunami hit, 113 of the students were at the school. Most of them were killed. Some drowned immediately, and some of the children rescued died later from lack of adequate medical resources, a ventilator would have kept them alive.

  Project Description

TRO plans to build a permanent Children's Welfare Home in Mullaitivu to rehabilitate and accommodate for those displaced by the Tsunami. The home will cater not only for those left orphaned as a result of the natural disaster but also for all those underprivileged within the region.

Orphaned and displaced children
Senthalir Illam - Tender Sprout - children's home
Senthalir Illam in Mullaithivu is a home for destitute children who have been severely affected by the war. The children cared for in Senthalir Illam, in addition to losing their relatives and having been displaced several times, have also suffered malnutrition, lack of security, interrupted education and economic deprivation. The CWDR currently looks after 115 children whose ages range from nine months to 17 years. The CWDR believes these children deserve a nurturing environment where their physical, mental and social well-being can flourish, and where they can envision a future for themselves as responsible members of society.

Programs aimed at the children's welfare and development:
Attendance at a formal school at Mullaithivu Maha Vidyalayam.
Catch up education for those who are drop outs
Special nutrition
Nursery school for the pre-school children
Sport, drama, music, art and other extra-curricular activities
This year, for the first time, four students sat for their Ordinary Level examinations
English language classes
On World Children's Day 2003 individual donors were offered the opportunity to participate in a new 'adopt a child' scheme whereby they could regularly contribute to the welfare and development of an individual child
